Reflection for Sunday May 26th
Sunday Gospel: Mt 28:16-20
In my job with the Pontifical Mission Societies I get to travel all around the Archdiocese speaking to kids at Catholic Schools and PREP programs about our call to be Missionary Disciples. In every presentation I share this week's Gospel passage known as the Great Commission. This passage comes from the Gospel of Matthew and is the very last thing that Jesus tells his disciples. He tells his disciples to do four things and reminds them that he will be with them always. This passage is at the heart of our call to evangelize and to share our faith. Every since I was 17 years old, when I accepted the Gospel and began to take my faith seriously, I have been motivated by this passage. Whether it was starting a Bible study in college, teaching in a Catholic school, running teen ministry, or having college students over my house in the summer, it always came back to this passage and the command to "Go and make disciples". When we have encountered the risen Christ and when the Gospel has truly penetrated our hearts then our response should be to share what we have received with others. If our faith is not worth sharing, is it really worth having? Don't we share the things we love and benefit from? Jesus calls all of us to be his disciples but he also invites us to partake in his mission. Think about what you have done to make other disciples. What is holding you back from sharing your faith? Remember, no matter how difficult it is to share your faith, that Jesus is with us always so go and make disciples! This week's Gospel is by Paul. |
Reflection for Sunday May 19thSunday Gospel: Jn 14:15-21
On this Pentecost Sunday, we hear the story of some of Jesus’s disciples gathered in a locked room, hiding from the Jewish authorities. For the first time since his resurrection, Jesus appears in the midst of them, and says, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” The Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples and they are granted the power to forgive sins. By giving them this power, Jesus gives us the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Like the disciples, we receive the Holy Spirit when we are confirmed. By sending them out, Jesus is saying that they must now share the gospel and spread the Kingdom of God, like what Jesus was sent to do on Earth. How do you live out the Gospel in your daily life? How are you able to spread the light of God to others? This weeks reflection is by Charlotte, MSJA class of 2026. |
Reflection for Sunday May 12thSunday Gospel: Jn 14:1-12
In Jn 17:11-19, Jesus is preparing to rejoin his father in heaven. He says how he has protected his followers and asks the father to do the same. He wants the Father to “consecrate them in truth.” Jesus wants us to stay with him, but we can't expect him to do all of the work. He will always love and guard us, but we must want to be loved and guarded. We were made to know, love, and serve the Lord, because we are not made for this world, but for the next. If we listen to his truth, Jesus will guard us on our way there and none of us will be lost. He will always offer us help, it is up to us to accept it. Spend some time this weekend praying for God's protection as you seek the truth. This week's reflection is by John D. in 8th grade. |
Reflection for Sunday May 5th by MarySunday Gospel: Jn 15:9-17
In this reading, Jesus explains the weight of His love for us as His friends. He also offers us the way to remain in His love and therefore that of the Father's. Jesus loves you! Have you ever let that truly sink in? He took the sins of all humanity upon Himself for the redemption of your body and soul. So how will you respond? Jesus gives us the simple answer: “love one another as I have loved you” (Jn 15:12). This is a universal call to self sacrificial love for everyone around you. It's not easy. In fact, I'd argue it's one of the most difficult things to do to genuinely and fully love people in your family or your friends. However, I invite you to really and honestly contemplate God's love for you, and consider how He is asking you to radiate that love to those closest to you. This week's reflection is by Mary in 10th grade. |
